I created this image to mark the 150th anniversary of the event ot the 1862 U.S./Dakota War. The war spread through the Minnesota River valley and ended with the hanging of thirty-eight Dakota on December 26, 1862, in Mankato MN.  The Dakota were hanged simultaneously in the largest mass execution in the history of the United States.  Of those tried, 303 men were sentenced to death.  After review of the court hearings President Abraham Lincoln commuted the sentences of all but forty Dakota men.  Of the condemned forty only thirty-eight were hanged on December 26, 1862. I portrayed the memory of thirty-eight Dakota individuals as crows wrapped with red ribbons of silence.  Each ribbon has a name of one of the thirty-eight Dakota hanged in 1862.  The texture on the crows is a blend of acrylic paint and soil from the historical sites of the Sioux Uprising of 1862.  The soil is from the Traverse des Sioux treaty site of 1851 and eight other locations of the Sioux Uprising of 1862.

These are the names of the thirty- eight Dakota: Tah ta kay gay, Ta tay hde don, Hda hin day, Te he hdo ne cha, Hypolite Ange, Ha pink pa, Do wan sa, Pa zee koo tay ma ne, Wa she choon, Mahpe o ke na ji, O ya tay a koo, Na pay shne, Baptiste Campbell, Ha tan in koo, Wa he hna, Ma kat e na jin, Toon kan ka yag e na jin, Shoon ka ska, Sna ma ni, Rda in yan kna, Ptan doo ta, Chay ton hoon ka, E tay hoo tay, Hin han shoon ko yag, Henry Milord, Wah pay du ta, Chaskay don, Muz za boom a du, Wa kin yan na, Am da cha, Ha pan, Wa kan tan, Chan ka h d a, Wy a tah ta wah,  A e cha ga, Toon kan e chah tay mane, May hoo way wa, Hay pee don
